What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)? Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a networking technology that uses a network cable (CAT5, common copper phone wire, or similar) to deliver electrical power to remote endpoint devices. Common endpoints for PoE solutions include VoIP phones, IP cameras, wireless access points (WAP).

A Power-over-Ethernet extender (PoE extender) takes PoE technology to the next level by breaking two important boundaries:

1) Extend the 100-meter distance limitation for standard Ethernet and up to 3,300 feet.

2) Leverage existing copper twisted-pair cabling to deliver electrical power over the same network connection as the Ethernet data stream.

The advantages of PoE extension include time and cost savings and greater flexibility of endpoint positioning among others.

Teach Me: More about PoE Ethernet Extenders

Electricity operates at a frequency of 60 Hz or less, while data transmission operates within frequencies between 10 million to 100 million Hz. By taking advantage of the frequency separation between electrical power transmission and digital data streams, both services can be delivered over the same cable. IEEE specification 802.3af provides for up to 5 watts of electrical power while IEEE 802.3at (PoE plus) provides up to 25 watts.

Demand for IP/Ethernet-connected devices is soaring with global expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT). Because it strikes the perfect blend of speed, cost, and ease of use, the popularity of power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is escalating.

PoE solutions can breathe new life into circuits previously deployed for such traditional non-IP applications as RS232/485 HVAC and building automation controls, alarms, CCTV, analog phones, intercom speakers, and others.

Typical Application for Power over Ethernet Extension

With the extended reach Patton PoE extenders provide, you can install your IP equipment exactly where you want it! Flexibility of device location is paramount in such applications as building security, where increased perimeter dimension and expanded spot coverage area are critical. Now you can quickly install PoE-capable devices such as wireless access points (WAPs), IP cameras, IP telephones, IP door stations, HVAC controls, LED lighting and more-with no additional overhead cost.
