The ForeFront FF-T1E1-SFP is an innovative TDM-over-IP Gateway packaged in an SFP module. The device is a new, convenient and easy way to transport T1/E1 (DS-1) across an Ethernet network.
The unit utilizes the SAToP (RFC4553) protocol to convert T1/E1 data into a single stream of Ethernet packets (Pseudowire). The units can be used in pairs or with other SAToP devices.
Small Form Factor Pluggable 20-pin Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) compliant, the unit can be installed in any Router, Switch our Media Converter with Ethernet SFP slots.
The unit integrates structure-agnostic TDM over packet technology (SAToP) into a miniature and cost-efficient module, reducing system and network complexity while delivering CAPEX and OPEX savings. It can aggregate T1/E1 into channelized SAToP links enabling each T1/E1 to be handled individually providing high-density TDM over IP/MPLS gateway functions.
These units are deployed in networks for major 5G mobile operators, and communications service providers, as well as mission-critical networks for Utility, Transport, Oil & Gas, Government, and Energy.
The devices are most typically installed in Ethernet/IP/MPLS Switches, Cell site Routers, Microwave Radio Systems or WDM systems.
Network transformation, including all-IP migration is the goal of most network operators. However, most maintain a TDM transport capability on their packet networks for the following reasons:
- Customers are using TDM circuits for leased lines and are unable to migrate quickly.
- Mobile Backhaul for GSM or LTE still depends on T1/E1/DS1.
- Legacy Enterprise Voice equipment relies on T1/E1/DS1 .
- Operators seek to preserve revenue streams from high-valued TDM services.
- Some customers require highest reliability and mission-critical SLAs for their TDM circuits, such as tele-protection
- Some Providers are obliged by contract or law to deliver TDM services.
The ForeFront FF-T1E1-SFP is a plug-and-play device which can be used without any provisioning and simplifies configuration and service turn-up of T1/E1 connections across a packet network. Optionally, an API is available to facilitate integration in existing equipment and management systems. This management interface allows configuration and helps to monitor relevant parameters.
The FF-T1E1-SFP is packaged in ruggedized SFP and supports operating temperatures from 40°C to 85°C.
The typical use-case is a point-to-point pseudo-wire emulation from SFP to SFP. Individual tunnels are created to separate the pseudo-wire traffic. The FF-T1E1-SFP uses a multi-cast destination MAC-address; Each pseudo-wire needs to be put into a separate Ethernet tunnel using VLAN, EVC, MPLS, VPLS or VPWS. The units are ‘plug-and-play’ and no configuration is needed.
Convert E1/T1 signals to packet with the FF-T1E1-SFP and aggregate using multiple SFPs or with other SAToP equipment. Useful for mobile backhaul and legacy customers such military, railway, energy.
