Modern Operating Rooms need to be equipped with Pro-AV systems to enable remote Live-Viewing and Streaming for Studio Production of Training Videos and for distance-learning; Baptist Miami Hospital used Fiber to solve several challenges.
Synopsis
HD cameras, medical imaging systems, microphones, intercoms and IFB "talk-back" devices need to be integrated and presented live in a Surgical Viewing Rooms and streamed to Production Studios on the Baptist Miami Hospital Campus; But the available conduit presented limited space to run cables and the cable runs to the remote locations were long. The cabling system also needed to co-exist with other medical systems in the operating rooms that generate RF and EMI noise.

The FiberPlex LightViper and TD-Series units convert dozens of different electrical interfaces to fiber, dramatically reducing the space that copper cable would otherwise occupy.
Audio and uncompressed video steams shared over a long distances at high bandwidth.
The FiberPlex products provide optical conversion for transporting uncompressed 3G-SDI camera, audio and data feeds from the OR to remote locations. This included High Definition SDI modules for 72Gbps of bidirectional optical transport.
Using fiber provided the electrical isolation and noise immunity needed for Pro-AV systems to co-exist with RF and EMI "noisy" equipment in the Operating Room setting.
As a result, operating room cameras and microphones now stream and record doctors' every decision and procedure in linear, uncompressed audio and video with unparalleled detail and accuracy.
Integrating video and audio conferencing means that live-viewers in a Surgical Viewing Room can interact and benefit from training in real-time.
The solution brings together a NewTek Tricaster 860, Mackie Audio Mixer and a Crestron Integration system.
The Crestron system allowed a Tricaster feed from monitors in the operating room, interfaced with medical imaging (endoscopic cameras), to be delivered to the remote locations.
The Story
Training future surgeons is an important part of today's healthcare; and the Baptist Miami Hospital has one of the more progressive residency and fellowship programs in the nation. So, when they built new Operating Rooms, they wanted that room equipped with systems that would enable live-viewing of surgeries from a Surgical Viewing Room and studio feeds to enable production of training videos for distance-learning purposes.
Midtown Video is a full-service Pro-AV technology integrator in south Florida. They help organizations maximize AV technology for collaboration and communication. Midtown are expert in delivering solutions for high quality video, teleconferencing, computer controlled AV and IT-integrated video production. That's why they were selected by Baptist Miami Hospital to help with the development and installation of the video training solution.
To accomplish the mission, the ORs needed to be equipped with HD cameras, medical imaging systems, microphones, intercoms and IFB "talk-back" devices. All of the video, audio and imaging streams needed to be integrated and presented live in a Surgical Viewing Room and Production Studio on the hospital campus.
There were several challenges. The available conduit presented limited space to run cables and the cable runs to the remote locations were long. The cabling system also needed to co-exist with other medical systems in the operating rooms that generate RF and EMI noise.
The FiberPlex brand products presented the perfect solution for Midtown Video and the Hospital. Fiber presented the opportunity to significantly reduce the space that dozens of copper cables would otherwise occupy. FiberPlex also delivered the broadband speeds needed for signals, including audio and uncompressed video steams to be shared over a long distance. Fiber provided the electrical isolation and noise immunity needed for the Pro-AV to co-exist with RF and EMI "noisy" equipment in the Operating Room setting.

The new visual training system designed by Midtown Video and utilizing FibePlex products overcame big challenges and succeeded wonderfully. Now future surgeons can view live medical procedures without having to step into the operating room. Surgical teams, students and training production teams can all work simultaneously and the content can be re-used for future resident surgeons.
