TechSpot: SmartNode enables Distinctive Ringtones

by Danny Staub

Tired of those annoying telemarketing calls trying to somehow get you to spend money on what they have to offer?  How about those phone calls that you answer and only hear dead air? And then there is that certain someone who calls you all the time and you just don't feel like talking to them?

Well, here is your chance to get alerted it is them calling before you even look at the caller-ID or pick up the phone. Yes we introduce to you TechSpot. The place where you will learn cool configurations you can implement on your SmartNodes. In this edition we take a look at distinctive ringing patterns. Patton Electronics Co., with its SmartNode Analog FXS Gateway product line, now offers a way for you to do this with its new feature of "Distinctive Ringing".

With this capability, available in Smartware release R5.T 2009-03-26 or newer, you can configure the SmartNode to be able to use different Distinctive Ringing profiles on either the called-e164, calling-e164 or called-alert-info call-properties.  This means that if get a call from your favorite Mother in-law, your phone will play a ring that only pertains to her, so you will now know right away who it is calling and can make the decision to either pick it up, or let it go to voicemail without having to move an inch!

Here is how these new configuration commands work.  First, you will need to add the ringing-cadence profiles with the play and pause durations that you want to have the ring played at.  Below is how you will enter the profile commands into the configuration.

Command

Purpose

Step 1

[node](cfg)# profile ringing-cadence <name>

Creates a ringing-cadence profile.

Step 2

[node](pf-ringingcad)[name]#play <duration>

[node](pf-ringingcad)[name]#pause <duration>

Configures the play and pause duration of the ringing cadence.

Duration:

[100..60000] Enter entry duration [ms]

Example:

profile ringing-cadence Bellcore-dr2

  play 1 800

  pause 2 400

  play 3 800

  pause 4 4000

profile ringing-cadence Bellcore-dr3

  play 1 400

  pause 2 200

  play 3 400

  pause 4 20

  play 5 800

  pause 6 4000

profile ringing-cadence Bellcore-dr4

  play 1 300

  pause 2 200

  play 3 1000

  pause 4 200

  play 5 300

  pause 6 4000

profile ringing-cadence Bellcore-dr5

  play 1 500

  pause 2 60000

Once you have correctly entered in these profiles to your configuration, you will need to use them in the FXS interfaces of your choice. These will be used when the FXS interface receives an incoming call from the call-control.

Command

Purpose

Step 1

[node](if-fxs)[name]# distinctive-ringing <Index> <property> <pattern> <profile name>

Adds, inserts or modifies a new distinctive-ringing entry to an fxs interface.

Index:

Enter the preference of the distinctive-ringing entry

Property:

called-e164 - called-party e164 number

calling-e164 - calling-party e164 number

called-alert-info - content of the SIP alert-info header without the <> brackets.

Pattern:

Regular expression pattern to match

Ex. 3015555555

 Example:

interface fxs <Interface name>

  distinctive-ringing 1 called-alert-info http://127.0.0.1/Bellcore-dr2 Bellcore-dr2

  distinctive-ringing 2 called-e164  3015555555 Bellcore-dr3

  distinctive-ringing 3 calling-e164 3015555555 Bellcore-dr4

(The above example shows the three different ways you can use these profiles with incoming calls from the call-control)

To remove this command from the FXS interfaces, you can use the no form of the command as seen below.

Command

Purpose

Step 1

[node](if-fxs)[name]# no distinctive-ringing [index]

Removes the entry with a specific index. If the index is absent, all entries will be removed.

Now your Smartnode is configured and ready to use the new Distinctive Ringing feature so you can sit back and relax with the peace of mind knowing that ring means your Mother In-law is calling.  Should you answer???  We will leave that for you to decide!!!
