What is a VoIP IAD? A VoIP IAD (see What is VoIP?) is a multi-functional networking device (Integrated Access Device or multiservice access gateway) that provides a WAN-access interface in addition to IP routing and a voice gateway services (see What is a VoIP Gateway?). Installed on the customer premise, the VoIP IAD is classified as customer-premise equipment (CPE). While there is some debate on the topic, a VoIP IAD is generally considered to be more efficient and cost-effective than a multi-unit CPE solution for most business-class IP-telephony applications (see the white paper CPE Architecture: When does All-IP Equal All-in-One?)

Teach Me: What is a VoIP IAD (What are integrated access devices?)

 
A Voice-over-IP Integrated Access Device (VoIP IAD) integrates three networking devices (VoIP Gateway, IP Router, and Internet access modem) into a single unit. By reducing the number of devices required to implement Internet telephony, a VoIP IAD simplifies network architecture and lowers the costs of installation, operation and maintenance. Currently popular modem specifications implemented in VoIP IADs include symmetrical ITU-T recommendation G.991.2 (a.k.a. G.SHDSL), asymmetrical ADSL2+, and VDSL2, which may be configured for symmetrical or asymmetrical line rates. VoIP IADs are sometimes referred to by other names, including Integrated Services Router (ISR), Multiservice Access Router (MSAR), and Multiservice Business Router (MSBR).

Typical VoIP IAD Applications
VoIP IADs can address various technical and practical challenges when implementing packet-based voice communications systems and/or unified communications (UC) solutions. Some common application scenarios are described below.

Convert Legacy PBX and FAX to VoIP
For the small to medium enterprise, the PBX represents a significant investment. While migrating to an ITSP service can save on recurring expenses, replacing that working legacy PBX can be a hard pill to swallow. And then there is the fax machine you still can't do without. A VoIP IAD offers a solution that combines the best of both world's as shown in the drawing below:



All-IP Migration with Fallback/Failover to Alternate Service Provider
Many enterprises, from small to large, want to transition to All-IP IP communications, yet have concerns about reliability and/or existing PSTN service contracts. Enter the VoIP IAD. Now the existing legacy PBX and PSTN connection can be preserved, while the new IP-PBX is introduced, tested, and proven. A legacy T1/E1/PRI interface provides failover to a secondary provider or alternate WAN link to provide business continuity in the event of IP network failure.
